Even online, legislator chooses to play it safe

Taiwanese writer-turned-legislator Li Ao continued to shy away from sensitive political topics yesterday when he chatted online on the sixth day of his mainland tour.

Mr Li is known for speaking his mind, but censors for the Phoenix Television website, which hosted the chat session, had apparently screened out sensitive questions.

Hopes fade for Bao's release

LEADING dissident Bao Tong has been transferred to a hospital for treatment but friends and relatives are losing hope for an early release.

An informed source said the family of Bao, the principal secretary of ousted party chief Zhao Ziyang, had petitioned the Ministry of Public Security and the Justice Ministry for permission to see his doctors.

Fears over health of jailed aide

THE health of Bao Tong, the jailed aide to former Chinese Communist Party chief Mr Zhao Ziyang, is continuing to decline, according to friends and relatives.

Bao is suffering from a reduced white blood cell count and severe gastritis, relatives said.

Riddle over 'freedom' of political prisoner

THE family of Bao Tong, former top aide of Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang, was last night puzzled by claims that he had been set free.

Justice Minister, Mr Cai Cheng, was quoted by local television last night saying the government has released the 60-year-old Bao to the public security authorities.
