First dry run of National Day parade starts today

Beijing was to begin the first rehearsal for its largest parade in a decade under tight security early today after 180,000 high school, college and university students were ferried to Changan Avenue and Tiananmen Square from all over the capital last night.

The rehearsal for the National Day parade was to take place from 3am to 5am, Xinhua reported.

Premier's secretary steps into limelight

The right-hand man to Premier Wen Jiabao for almost a decade took centre stage yesterday with his appointment as deputy secretary general of the State Council, Xinhua reported.

Qiu Xiaoxiong, Mr Wen's secretary since 1999, has accompanied the premier on dozens of visits around the country and overseas, the latest one being a three-day trip to Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

China's new statistics chief, Xie Fuzhan, has warned his subordinates to learn from the fall of his disgraced predecessor, Qiu Xiaohua, and pledged to revamp the National Bureau of Statistics' system of checks and balances.

Catching up

China - the world's fourth-largest economy - could overtake Germany in third place by 2010, said National Bureau of Statistics director Qiu Xiaohua .

Speaking at Peking University on Monday, Mr Qiu said China's gross domestic product per capita would reach US$3,000 by 2010, while 15 years from now, it would reach US$5,000, 'and that means our economy will match that of Japan'.
