Pulling the right strings

Xiamen is the birthplace of the Chinese marionette. Hundreds of small and large puppet troupes operate out of Xiamen, Gulangyu Island and the city of Quanzhou.

The puppets are expressive and complex, with the ability to display a range of characters and, in some cases, play musical instruments.

Online gambling syndicate smashed

Police in Fujian have smashed an online gambling syndicate that handled bets worth more than 328 million yuan (HK$375 million), China News Service reports. Longyan Municipal Public Security Bureau smashed the gambling syndicate on June 29, with 12 suspects arrested, it said.

Team plugs Quanzhou

A trade delegation from Quanzhou, Fujian province, is in Hong Kong this week seeking investment as well as to promote the city's textiles and footwear industries through its pavilion at Hong Kong Fashion Week.

The delegation, led by Quanzhou deputy mayor Chen Rongzhou, is promoting 50 projects and hopes to attract some US$1.04 billion in investment.

Four more cases take mainland tally to 25

The mainland reported four new swine flu infections yesterday - one in Fujian , two in Beijing and one in Guangdong - taking the total number of confirmed cases to 25, according to Xinhua.

The Fujian case involves a man, 23, who studied in Canada. The Beijing pair are a Chinese-American and a Chinese student who studied in the United States.

Shanghai Industrial to reclaim land for Quanzhou project

Shanghai-listed Shanghai Industrial Development has won the right to reclaim 652,269 square metres of land for 3.82 billion yuan and develop it into a core business district in the coastal city of Quanzhou, Fujian province.

The firm earlier disclosed that the investment cost for the whole project, which is slated for completion in 2015, would be 14.91 billion yuan.

Investment scam chief flees with millions

Police are searching for a Fujian businessman who has fled the province with hundreds of millions of yuan, leaving more than 100,000 people who lent money to the firm out of pocket.

Lin Fengliang , head of the Minlin Group in Quanzhou city , was believed to have fled on April 7, the Democracy and Law newspaper reported. The next day, the company announced it was closing.
