Cuban dissidents launch opposition coalition

 Top Cuban dissidents Guillermo Farinas and Jose Daniel Ferrer joined forces on Wednesday to create a more powerful opposition as Raul Castro celebrates his re-election to lead the Communist-run island.

New Cuban law waves goodbye to exit visa

They didn’t jump for joy, but they didn’t exactly pooh-pooh it, either. On Monday Cubans got their first taste of a reform letting them travel abroad without a reviled and costly exit visa.

Daughter of Marino Murillo, possible successor to Cuba's Castro, defects

The 24-year-old daughter of Cuban vice-president Marino Murillo defected earlier this month and is now living in Tampa, Florida, sources said.

Glenda Murillo Diaz crossed the Mexican border at Laredo, Texas, on around August 16, the sources said.

Deals signed to help Castro's Cuba

China agreed to support Cuba's health system and economic development yesterday as the two countries signed eight deals designed to boost co-operation.

The signing of the deals was witnessed by President Hu Jintao and his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, after talks in Beijing.
