Sometimes, we have to accept things we don't like. At school, we have no choice. And when we grow up, not everyone is lucky enough to land their dream job. We soon realise that we can't have everything we want.

More than two decades have passed since its release, but Krzysztof Kieslowski's 10-part reflection on the 10 Commandments remains a cinematic landmark. While critical of a world peopled with alienated cynics, the late Polish filmmaker was always empathetic to The Decalogue characters' flaws and travails.

Lofty ideas

Space is often an issue in Hong Kong homes, where room to display favourite treasures is at a premium. When the walls are suitably decked but you just have to hang that new painting from Vietnam or silk scarf from Cambodia, look up. The ceiling can provide a new frontier.

Gambling on rights of the individual

Government is not God and a sin is not necessarily a crime. I wish there was some way of drumming that into the heads of people who oppose legalisation of football gambling on moral grounds.

Housing scam official appeals

Disgraced former deputy tax commissioner Agnes Sin Law Yuk-lin and her husband yesterday launched a legal bid to clear their names following their conviction for housing allowance fraud.

Last December, Ms Sin and her husband, Sin Kam-chuen, received a nine-month suspended jail term for deceptively obtaining $330,000 in housing allowances between 1983 and 1986.

Things began to go a little wobbly on the wholesale front and one day Ms Ching found herself out of a job.

IT'S amazing how much effort people who have no leadership abilities put into learning how to lead. They attend courses, read books and take exams, and all they get is the contempt of their staff who have no respect for someone who has to learn human nature from a book.
