Dam breached in Shanxi leads to flooding and evacuation

The top of an irrigation duct at the Quting reservoir in Hongtong county caved in on Friday morning, leading to the partial collapse of its dam walls, the report said, citing an unidentified local official.

Old works 'safe' amid tunnelling

Officials have promised that tunnelling work needed to replace reservoirs near the University of Hong Kong as it expands its campus will not affect a grade-three-listed waterworks in the middle of the site.

Two saltwater reservoirs are being rebuilt underground to minimise the impact on the environment.

Pointless switch

Your May 30 report on government water supplies to Discovery Bay reveals a farcical situation.

The current reservoir's capacity is sufficient to meet the needs of Discovery Bay well into the future.

Changing over to government water would be wasteful, because the reservoir will still be maintained and its water used for flushing and watering the golf course.

Watchdog groups have been promised a say in the inspection of the quality of water pumped in from the mainland.

The move comes amid growing unease over the quality of water in the Dongjiang, or East River, in Guangdong - a major source of Hong Kong's drinking water.

China supply still flows

WATER is still pumping in from China even though local reservoirs have a 216-day supply after recent rains, the Water Supplies Department said.

Across the territory, 15 of the 17 reservoirs are full, representing 92 per cent of total capacity.
