Eye operation first for HK

A DELICATE and risky eye operation which could restore the sight of thousands of partially blind elderly people has been carried out for the first time in Hong Kong.

The microsurgery, performed in only a handful of places worldwide, has been used on 10 patients suffering from retinal degeneration at the Prince of Wales Hospital in the past four months.

Cause of red pupils

WHY do some people's pupils appear red-orange when they have their picture taken with a flash? The reddish-orange dot you see in people's eyes in photographs is light reflected from the flash off the surface of the retina, says Dr Carmen Puliafito, chairman of the ophthalmology department at the Tufts University School of Medicine in the United States.
