Costly news

News provider Reuters Holdings' shares were 2.8 per cent lower at 648 pence (about HK$78.01) in midday trade yesterday, after falling 3.4 per cent on Wednesday. The firm has said it faces higher costs in the next 18 months.

New link for Reuters

IN a mere two months, networking specialists Pacific Datacom has installed a state-of-the-art ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) computer network for the new headquarters of Reuters East Asia.

The network installed at a cost of US$1 million connects the three floors of Reuters' new offices in Taikoo Shing with their central computer facility through two T1 links.

Reuters dealing service wins approval of money brokers

REUTERS has maintained its dominance as a service provider to foreign exchange dealers since it launched its first Monitor Dealing Service in 1981.

The service formed the basis for the current global network of about 22,000 dealing terminals.

The first phase of its most modern existing service, known as Dealing 2000-1, was introduced in 1989.

BROKERS who offer clients soft commissions, or soft dollar deals, agree to provide certain services in return for business.

The broker then defrays some of the fund manager's costs by supplying specialist services which are supposed to assist the fund manager.

Reuters offers new service

REUTERS has launched its financial television service for the foreign exchange, debt and treasury markets. Reuters Financial Television (RFTV) delivers live coverage of key market events, plus commentary from leading financial analysts, to information screens in dealing rooms. RFTV has been installed for trials at about 35 customer sites in Britain and 10 other European countries.

News scoop

REUTER, the world news and information organisation, said yesterday it would start distributing Japan's largest daily newspaper electronically this week.

The Yomiuri Shimbun, which has a morning edition circulation of almost 10 million, will be available outside Japan to subscribers of Reuter's Japanese-language news service, called Reuterscoop.

REUTER is due to launch a new information service aimed at the average businessman rather than the well-heeled multi-national.

The new product will also be especially useful to businessmen on the move, giving them dial-up access to information which, if not quite on a par with what the multi-nationals can afford, can at least even the odds up a little.

Reuter Business Briefing, which has a database of 10 million articles from its own and other international media sources, would be continually updated, the company said.

REUTERS has bought Effix Holdings SA, a major supplier of software for Reuters dealing room information management systems, from the Paris-based Banque Internationale de Gestion et de Tresorerie (BIGT) for FF58.8 million (about HK$82.3 million).
