The Reuters-backed business-to-business Web site qingniao.net was launched yesterday. The site's flagship product, Search.qingniao.net, contains data on more than 4.4 million mainland enterprises.

Reserves up

Asia's recovery has fuelled a trade surplus that swelled Taiwan's central bank reserves by US$16.95 billion in the first 11 months of the year, more than double net inflows from the same period last year. Exports earned $122.76 billion in foreign exchange from January to November.

Tibetans not benefiting

I refer to the report from Reuters which appeared in the South China Morning Post on July 5, on the stock market activities that are booming in the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

However, to conclude, as the Reuters report does, that the local Tibetan population maintains this stock market, or that the exchange is, in any way, directly benefiting the local economy, was a little hasty.

CLSA to remain on course despite poor survey result

CLSA Global Emerging Markets is unfazed by a survey that indicated a sharp decline in fund-manager support for the brokerage's research.

According to a Reuters Tempest Survey of Hong Kong and the mainland, three leading global investment banks were dominating Asian research and broker commissions.

This finding was not news to many middle-tier brokerages.

It isn't every day a newspaper leads its front page with a story knocking down two reports it never ran. But there was China Daily on Thursday giving six columns across the top of page one to a denial of a story from Reuters news agency and a clarification issued by a Hong Kong newspaper.

Social unrest triggered by the State Council's ban on direct sales is spreading, with state media being told to play down coverage to avoid fuelling the crisis.

Computer sabotage term cut

A Reuters computer engineer who sabotaged vital financial data had his prison sentence slashed by the Court of Appeal yesterday in a landmark ruling.

The courts had a duty to deter those who threatened to damage Hong Kong's reputation as a commercial centre, Mr Justice Mohammed Saied said.
