Ricky Yiu Poon-Fai

Ricky Yiu is a famous racehorse trainer in Hong Kong. Born in 1957, he is the first Chinese trainer to have won at Group One level on foreign soil, taking out the Sprinters Stakes in Japan with Ultra Fantasy and the KrisFlyer Sprint in Singapore with Sacred Kingdom.

Ricky Yiu Poon-fai breathed a sigh of relief when Dundonnell broke through for a maiden local victory which ensured the highly-rated import stayed in his yard, but has no plans to push on to a Group One Hong Kong Derby start with the talented four-year-old.

Jockey Club officials will proceed to tomorrow's Sha Tin meeting confident the zilpaterol feed contamination will not play a role. The bulk of runners declared on Thursday for the meeting underwent urine tests after all horses at Sha Tin had been taken off the two feeds found to contain the cattle supplement, a prohibited substance.

17 Hong Kong horses test positive for drugged feed as zilpaterol found in 2nd brand

The possibility that Hong Kong's racehorses have been exposed to contaminated feed yesterday widened to cover more than half the population in training at Sha Tin after a second type of feed from California was found to contain the banned substance zilpaterol; a total of 17 horses have tested positive for it.

Ricky Yiu Poon-fai has never won a premiership but he is well-known as the trainer of former three-time world champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom, who was also Hong Kong’s Horse of the Year in 2009-10, and won the inaugural international Hong Kong Sprint with Fairy King Prawn.
