Hubris' wake

Hong Kong's modern history has been scarred with natural and human-made tragedies of which few of us have an inkling. There was a typhoon in 1937 in which 11,000 people perished and another in 1962 that took the lives of 183 and left 72,000 homeless.

Taste of the Titanic, only safely ashore

It's time travel on a plate. On the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic this Saturday, eight diners will be paying HK$15,000 each to eat the same 10-course meal served to first-class passengers just before the ship hit an iceberg and more than 1,500 people perished.

Glengarry Glen Ross

It is unfathomable to think the highest grossing film of all-time was about an ill-fated passenger liner which sank in icy waters, killing an estimated 1,500 people.

Even in this summer of Star Wars-mania with the release of The Phantom Menace, the 1997 blockbuster Titanic is unlikely to be caught by George Lucas' latest effort.

Titanic night

TVB has rather mischievously been using that ghastly Celine Dion song to plug A Night To Remember (Pearl, 9.30 pm) as the Titanic film instead of a Titanic film. Those who tune in expecting Leo and Kate smooching will be disappointed, but not for long.
