Officer's car 'used by gang'

A police officer's sports car was allegedly used by a burglary syndicate to transport stolen pagers to a customer.

The constable, 28, was arrested on Sunday but bailed pending further inquiries.

The Mitsubishi sports car was registered in the officer's name, but he is not believed to be involved.

Three suspected mainland illegal immigrants broke into a Kowloon Tong house, tied up and gagged a businessman, his two Filipino maids and a Nepalese driver and escaped with $250,000 in cash and jewellery yesterday.

The Putonghua-speaking men climbed into the two-storey house through an unlocked kitchen window at the Beacon Hill Road home at about 3.30am.

Macau shots

A gunbattle broke out after a robbery at a pawnshop near the Jai-Alai Stadium, Macau, early this morning. Three armed men threatened staff and ransacked the shop. As they were fleeing with watches and gold ornaments two police officers challenged them. Shots were exchanged and one of the robbers was hit in the leg.

Shoppers trapped as police hunt robbers

A Causeway Bay shopping centre was sealed off yesterday, trapping hundreds of people as police searched for a gang of robbers.

About 1,500 people were stuck in The In Square in Windsor House for up to three hours while about 110 armed police, many wearing bullet-proof vests, were deployed to seal off the 15-storey building and search it.

Estate agent in robbery snatch

A 25-year-old estate agent was snatched for 11 hours in a Oi Man Estate car park, Homantin, by two men who tied her up and robbed her of some cash and her bank cards and PIN numbers.

The victim managed to free herself when the robbers left her in another car park in Tai Po Road, Shekkipmei.

Burglars go unnoticed

Two burglars escaped with cash and valuables worth $800,000 from a house in Braga Circuit, Ho Man Tin, as the occupants ate in the dining room.

The burglary was discovered when a neighbour phoned the owner to say he had seen two men, one holding a bag, jump into the garden from the first-floor balcony.
