Robyn Lamsam has been handed the chance of an Asian Games swan-song after being named in Hong Kong's provisional swimming squad despite failing to clock necessary qualifying times.

Robyn Lamsam returns to international competition hoping to regain her confidence which was shattered by her failure to qualify for last year's Olympic Games.

Hong Kong's leading female swimmer over the past five years has had to endure a painful 10 months trying to find the form with which she led Hong Kong to a silver medal in the 1994 Asian Games 4 x 100 metres relay.

Arthur Li Kai-yin

Hong Kong's Arthur Li Kai-yin and Robyn Lamsam struck gold at the Asia Pacific Age Group Swimming Championships in Pusan, South Korea, yesterday.

Li, who broke two national records at the Atlanta Olympics and is currently the fastest Hong Kong swimmer, won gold medals in the men's 50 and 100 metres freestyle.

Robyn Lamsam has passed up an opportunity to take another shot at qualifying for this summer's Atlanta Olympics.

Lamsam was given a chance to appeal for another trial so she could try to reach the Olympic qualifying standards.

Lamsam running out of time

OLYMPIC hopes are fast fading for swim ace Robyn Lamsam after she failed to reach the qualifying standards in the selection trials at the Kowloon Park pool yesterday.

Lamsam, a holder of 19 Hong Kong records, swam the 50, 200 and 400 metres freestyle at the trials, but did not go close to the qualifying times for Atlanta.

Lamsam off to Pan-Pacs

SWIMMER Robyn Lamsam yesterday removed any doubts about her participation in next month's Pan-Pacific Championships by confirming her place in Hong Kong's squad for Atlanta.

Lamsam, triple gold medallist for Hong Kong at the recent Pacific Ocean Games in Colombia, was initially reluctant to interrupt her training schedule to take part in the meet.

Lamsam takes HK's fourth gold

SWIMMER Robyn Lamsam won her second gold medal and Hong Kong's fourth at the Pacific Ocean Games in Cali, Colombia.

Lamsam, whose first gold medal came in the women's 200 metres freestyle, turned on the power once again to win the 400 metres freestyle event in four minutes and 29.41 seconds.

But the time was well off her Hong Kong national record of 4:15.28.

Tough schedule for Saunders

COSMO Saunders is likely to be the only local swimmer to represent Hong Kong in all the remaining legs of the Epson World Cup in Europe.

The Hong Kong Swimming Association has named nine swimmers to represent the territory in the six legs of the short course championships - but Saunders is the sole swimmer pencilled in for all legs.

It will be the second time such a World Cup event, the first leg of the seven-stop short course series, has been staged in the territory.

Bronze turns silver for two honoured swimmers

ASIAN Games relay medallists Katie Lau King-ting and Robyn Lamsam will share Hong Kong's Swimmer of the Year Award for women in tomorrow's prize presentation.

Katie and Robyn are members of the relay team who finished third in the 4 x 100 freestyle event in Hiroshima two months ago, but they are now waiting to collect a silver medal following the disqualification of China.

Lamsam misses chance for medal

HONG KONG completed their Asian Games swimming campaign with relay bronze medallist Robyn Lamsam finishing fourth in the women's 50 metres freestyle at the Big Wave Indoor Pool yesterday.

Lamsam clocked 26.95 seconds, marginally behind Japan's bronze medallist Sumika Minamoto, who touched home in 26.59 seconds.

Territory swimmers off form in heats

HONG KONG swimmers once again failed to set any national records in the second day of the swimming competition at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.

All four swimmers were overwhelmed by the quality field at the Saanich Commonwealth Place, led by the Australians, Canadians and English.
