Saatchi wins IMS account amid cutbacks

Saatchi & Saatchi has won a share of the huge Hongkong Telecom account at the same time the agency has trimmed its Malaysian operation.

The firm has been appointed the creative agency for the telecom giant's Interactive Media Services (IMS) division.

Saatchi revamp

Saatchi & Saatchi Interactive United States' operation has been revamped to become Darwin Digital. It will also handle interactive media for Zenith Media Services.

Coby O'Brien, 38, senior vice- president and director of Saatchi Interactive in New York, becomes president and chief executive.

Saatchi predicts China bonanza

Saatchi and Saatchi has named Patrick Pitcher as its new chief executive for the Asia region. He will replace Pete Watkins who is leaving the advertising business.

Mr Pitcher, a South African who has headed Saatchi's Canada operation for the past four years, has a mandate to develop the company's China interests.

Zenith serves McCain

Zenith Media, the media-planning company formed by Saatchi and Saatchi and Bates, has won its first account representing frozen food giants McCain Foods in Hong Kong and southern China.

The company has also appointed Saatchi and Saatchi media director Steven Chang as general manager of its China operation. He will be based in Guangzhou.

Agency tops in turnover

China Advertising Association has ranked Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising China as the mainland's top agency in terms of turnover in 1995.

Saatchi & Saatchi said billings amounted to 636 million yuan (about HK$591.48 million). The next biggest agency, Grey Advertising, had billings of 310 million yuan.

Regional deal

M&C Saatchi has won a US$6-million account to co-ordinate advertising for Packard Bell in the Asia-Pacific region. Saatchi will launch its first regional adverts for the US computer giant during the last quarter of this year.

The International Herald Tribune has appointed M & C Saatchi as its media partner for Asia. The Hong Kong advertising company will be responsible for all aspects of creative and communications for the paper.

IN London, Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising has won two morale-boosting accounts, while it sweats on a vital decision by British Airways.

The Kingfisher retail group will move the Comet electrical account alongside the B & Q and Woolworth accounts already handled by the agency.

Saatchi in call for softening of new ad laws

CHINA'S stiff advertising laws, stringent enough to prevent children from appearing in any advertisement, even for kiddies' medicine, are proving tough to deal with, says Saatchi and Saatchi.

The firm's China advertising managing director, Clifford Torng, said that although tough, the tightening of the laws would be justified in the long run.

Year's finest

SAATCHI & Saatchi has been voted Taiwan's 1994 Agency of the Year by the Chinese edition of Advertising Age.

The three-year-old annual award was originally based on creative strength, but this time selection criteria was expanded to include advertising themes and results, product selling power, market share growth and the agency's overall image.

Gremlins in Saatchi campaign

'GOT a problem - call Pete' could be the alternative headline on Saatchi & Saatchi's new self-publicity campaign, launched last week with the brave corporate motto: Nothing is impossible.

Under the headline, 'Can an advertising agency change the world?', Saatchi fired its first salvo with double-page full-colour spreads in major regional publications, including the Post.
