Google privacy settlement approved

Google's US$22.5 million agreement with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to settle claims the company improperly planted cookies on Apple's Safari internet browser has been approved by a federal judge.

US District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco found arguments from a consumer group - that the settlement was inadequate - unpersuasive and accepted the agreement.

Coming quickly on the heels of having replaced the old self-serve betting machines on the racecourses with shiny new ones of dubious worth (beware, they don't read the input tickets any better than the so-called dinosaurs they replaced), the Jockey Club last week upset more than the odd customer by changing the face of its website.

Call to the wild

Diane von Furstenberg The New York-based designer takes a flight of fantasy to exotic shores this summer, with long, loose silhouettes, wraps and kaftans made for swishing in the sea breeze, but which might look equally at home on safari. Bold prints and rich colours mark the designer's nod to the wilds of the jungle, with citrus brights glowing against jungle greens and neutral shades.

Range roving

With a working knowledge of African safaris compiled mainly from Hollywood films and TV series of the 1950s and 60s, my vocabulary for such was, until recently, limited to words such as 'Daktari', 'Hatari' and 'Mogambo'. Likewise, my imagination was occupied by sweat-stained, leopard-skin hat bands, elephant guns and fatally faulty mosquito nets.

Exhibition celebrates beauty of African wildlife

An exhibition featuring photographs of giraffes, elephants and other African animals brings the safari to the city.

Safari Snap Shots: African Wildlife and Landscapes is on at the Fringe Club in Central until Saturday.

The photos were taken by Jay and Shy Sala, who set up Safari Snap Shots in 2005.
