St Lawrence tolls set for increase

St Lawrence Seaway cargo tolls will rise 2.5 per cent on August 1. The increase will be the first since 1993.

Lakes deal

Ship-board engineers have ratified a five-year contract with Great Lakes shipping companies, the president of the Canadian Marine Officers Union says.

About 250 union engineers went on strike last week over a contract dispute. The strike affected the Canadian Lake Carriers' Association.

The St Lawrence Seaway is scheduled to open on Wednesday.

Canada will grant control of its ports to local authorities under a bill designed to save the federal government as much as C$1 billion (about HK$5.66 billion) over the next decade.

Shipping trade lured to St Lawrence

CANADIAN and American trade officials are enticing shipping firms from Hongkong to use the Great Lakes St Lawrence Seaway by offering a 50 per cent rebate on seaway lock toll-charges.

Mr David Sanders, chief of staff of the United States Department of Transportation, said all new businesses would enjoy the rebate which had been agreed to by both the US and Canada.

Trade visit to promote Great Lakes seaway

A HIGH-LEVEL joint trade delegation from the United States and Canada will visit Hongkong in early May as part of a Pacific Rim mission to promote the St Lawrence Seaway System as a major shipping route for the global flow of goods.

It would be the first such mission to the Far East which accounted for one million tonnes of cargo shipped annually through the Seaway.
