Fiery dragons on the water

This Saturday is the Dragon Boat Festival. Rowers will take to flamboyant dragon boats to show off the rewards of their hard work over the past few weeks - and months.

Hosted by members of the Aberdeen Dragon Boat Race Organising Committee, two junior reporters were in Aberdeen last Saturday to try out the sport.

HK$760,000 of illegal cigarettes seized

Marine police seized contraband cigarettes worth HK$760,000 on a motorised sampan in Deep Bay in an anti-smuggling operation. Two boats were spotted on radar off Tsim Bei Tsui, but as police closed in, one of the boats headed for Shenzhen. The other boat sped towards Deep Bay and two men abandoned it, swimming ashore and escaping.

Police arrest 10 on sampan off Tuen Mun

Marine police intercepted a motorised sampan off Tuen Mun yesterday and arrested a 16-year-old mainland youth and nine illegal immigrants from South Asia aged from 24 to 34. Pursuit craft were sent to intercept the sampan when it was spotted at about 3am. Police said the boat came from the mainland and that the mainlander was suspected to be a people smuggler.

Babies among those tossed into the sea as sampan overturns

Fourteen adults and two babies on their way to visit family and friends for Lunar New Year fell into the sea yesterday when their sampan capsized at a jetty in North Lantau.

All managed to reach the Sha Lo Wan jetty, where they were given blankets to cover themselves and waited in a temple before being transported to Tung Chung.

Two bodies found in sunken boat, one missing

The bodies of two of the three people missing after a sampan sank off Lantau on Thursday were found in the boat on the seabed yesterday. The search for a 70-year-old man was continuing last night, the Marine Department said. The bodies of the two women were discovered at about 5.30pm and 6.30pm after a hydrographic survey boat located the sunken sampan.

One body found in sunken boat, two missing

The body of a woman, one of three people missing after a sampan sank off Lantau on Thursday, was found in the boat on the seabed yesterday. The search for another woman and man was continuing last night, the Marine Department said. The body was discovered at 5.30pm after a hydrographic survey boat located the sunken sampan. Police were trying to establish the woman's identity last night.

Three feared drowned after sampan sinks off Sokos Islands

Three people were missing, presumed dead, after a sampan loaded with cement and bricks sank south of Lantau yesterday. Three others, including its owner, were plucked from the water by passing fishermen.

Boy rescued by sampan

A boy was rescued by a sampan after falling into Victoria Harbour from the waterfront at North Point yesterday. The Primary Five boy, 11, and his friend - a girl, 10 - went fishing about 4pm and the boy fell into the sea as they were climbing down the sea wall. The girl shouted for help and alerted a woman, who called the police.

9 held over lucky trees thefts

Marine police arrested nine mainlanders yesterday on suspicion of stealing fung shui trees after a pre-dawn high-speed chase involving two sampans. Officers seized 20 Buddhist pines from one of the sampans that ran ashore at Beaufort Island during the chase. The suspects, aged between 18 and 38, were being held for questioning.

2009 start-up target for Aberdeen tourist project

The long-delayed project to develop Aberdeen harbour into a tourist destination that blends traditional culture with modern living is to start as early as 2009, according to the latest blueprint.

Some district councillors yesterday called the project long overdue and expressed hope it could help revive the fishing industry.

Sails of the centuries

One of my favourite places in Hong Kong is Aberdeen harbour. Sit along the promenade by the basketball courts and you can watch the sampans, ferries and other craft buzz in and out. Some of the sampans carry vegetables and noodles to feed other seafarers and some ferry passengers.

Police seek more information on fatal boat collision in Sai Kung

Updated at 6.14pm: Police on Tuesday were appealing for more information on the fatal boat collision in Sai Kung on Sunday in which a Hong Kong man and his wife were killed.

The 44-year-old man, surnamed Leung, and his 41-year-old wife were taking a sampan home off Pak Ma Tsui at Sai Kung. The tragedy occurred when a motorboat struck the sampan at great speed.
