New World to open a Pentahotel in San Po Kong

New World Hospitality, the hotel arm of New World Development, has announced a plan to open a Pentahotel in San Po Kong, which will be the first Hong Kong property managed by the company.

Department removes 14 metre coral tree

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department said it removed yesterday a coral tree in Wong Tai Sin that was listed on the register of old and valuable trees, to protect the public. A group of tree experts found the 14 metre tree at the San Po Kong interchange was at risk of collapsing owing to an attack by a kind of wasp, the department said.

Clan clashes with temple over tomb

A row has broken out between self-proclaimed descendants of sea goddess Tin Hau and managers of a temple worshipping Taoist deity Wong Tai Sin.

Scuffles and heated arguments between Wong Tai Sin Temple managers and the Lam clan over the management of the clan's ancient tomb near the temple drew crowds of spectators and led to police intervention yesterday.

A double-decker bus hit the wall of Kowloon Cognitio College and ran along 10 metres of a footpath before stopping in Prince Edward Road East, San Po Kong, at about 9.30am. Two passengers were slightly injured.

Ambulance in collision at traffic lights

An ambulance collided head-on with a car while trying to go through a red light at the junction of Fung Tak Road and Po Kong Village Road in Wong Tai Sin at 10.26am yesterday. No one was injured. Police said the ambulance had its siren switched on and blue light flashing on its way to pick up a patient at Ngau Tau Kok home for the elderly.

Plan to cement Kai Tak nullah abandoned

The notorious Kai Tak nullah - once one of the city's most putrid waterways - is to get a new life as a landscaped stream along its full length.

The government has abandoned plans to cement over part of the nullah in Wong Tai Sin and the Drainage Services Department is working on a plan to be released for consultation next month.

Industry on the hard road to recovery

HONG KONG INSTITUTION of Engineers president Wong Kwok-lai believes the recent upturn in the local engineering industry will continue next year.

Brick attack on shopkeeper

A 56-year-old convenience shopkeeper in Hong Keung Street, San Po Kong, was attacked by a man in his 30s armed with a brick in an attempted robbery. The attacker fled after a struggle and the victim was treated for head injuries in Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
