Newtown schools reopen as first funerals of shooting victims held

Most children in Newtown returned to classes yesterday for the first time since last week's shooting, but survivors stayed at home and Sandy Hook school remained a crime scene.

In a thin drizzle, yellow school buses once again rolled through the Connecticut town, where 5,400 children are enrolled.

It is not the way Emilie Parker died that will matter, it is the way she lived. She was only 61/2, but her father said she was an extraordinary force in the lives of loved ones.

"Emilie was bright, creative and very loving," said Robbie Parker, 30, who moved his family to Connecticut eight months ago.

Evil, as the governor described it, seems incompatible with a place as quaint as this.

Newtown, Connecticut was founded 300 years ago - its population is 27,000 and everybody knows everybody. The high street is just a few clothing or gift shops and a couple of family style restaurants.

Teacher victims of mass shooting recalled as dedicated to students

Dawn Hochsprung was known as the open and friendly face of Sandy Hook Elementary School, a 47-year-old principal pursuing a doctorate on weekends and quick with a smile.

Victoria Soto, 27, was a first-grade teacher, who liked to tell stories about her students. She lived in a pale blue house with her mother and three siblings. She shovelled snow from an ailing neighbour's walkway.

Relatives of those killed in past mass shootings reacted with outrage to Friday’s news of another massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut. The tragedy also reignited calls from gun control activists for laws restricting access to weapons.
