Bar review: Castro's 148

The bar serves large drinks with bold flavours such as mojitos and sangria. Photo: David Wong

Jordan's newly opened Cuban-themed bar and restaurant is a sequel to the original Castro's, a Tsim Sha Tsui institution and one of my favourite bars in Hong Kong. For the most part, the new one lives up to the reputation of its big brother.

Trash talk

Woe betide any cook who is caught throwing out any usable scrap, or worse, ingredients spoiled from negligence. Letting food go bad is like throwing money straight into the bin.

Finds - an acronym for Finland, Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden - is part of the burgeoning dining scene at Elements, Tsim Sha Tsui. The restaurant (the first branch is in Central) may be Scandinavian themed, but its cocktails are designed for warmer climes. Drinks that can be served in ice-cold jugs are perfect for summer entertaining.

Sangria at first sight

I'll never forget my first jug of sangria. It accompanied my first paella which was made outdoors peasant-style in a small village outside Toledo.
