Executive Councillor Chow Chung-kong has been made the chairman of the advisory committee on corruption at the Independent Commission Against Corruption. His term will start on New Year's Day and last for two years.

Two suspects held after cat's torture triggers outrage on the internet

Two people were arrested yesterday on suspicion of torturing a stray cat at a public housing estate in Sau Mau Ping, Kwun Tong district, after pictures of the injured animal triggered an outcry on social networking sites.

The cat had to be put down following the attack.

The two unnamed suspects, a 24-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, were taken in for police questioning.

Man kills wife before jumping to death

A man stabbed his wife to death before jumping to his death from a 38-floor flat in Sau Mau Ping on Friday night.

Police superintendent Remus Chong Siu-hing said the case has been classified as a murder-suicide and was being investigated by the Sau Mau Ping district crime squad.

Man leaps to death after killing wife

A mentally ill man jumped to his death from a 27th floor flat on a Sau Mau Ping estate last night after murdering his wife and seriously injuring his mother and a daughter.

It was the third murder-suicide involving married couples within a month and the second murder this year committed by a mentally ill person.

Bag thief jailed for death of teacher

A bag-snatcher whose botched attack last year led to the death of a well-known ballet teacher was jailed for 10 years yesterday.

Wong Pak-hung, 45, unemployed, pleaded guilty in the Court of First Instance to manslaughter in the death of Mimi Chui Moon-fan (pictured), 44, the principal of the Christine Liao School of Ballet, on July 13 last year, and one count of robbery.

Flasher strikes again in Sau Mau Ping

A sex offender is being hunted after indecently exposing himself yesterday to a group of schoolgirls outside a garden in Sau Mau Ping, the scene of one of a spate of recent similar offences.

The man exposed himself to four or five girls in Hong Lee Road at about 8am but fled before officers arrived.

A search was mounted but the suspect was not found.

Police slow to warn of flashers, parents say

The police are again being criticised for being slow to warn the public of crimes, this time a series of flashing incidents in which men have exposed themselves to schoolgirls in Sau Mau Ping, Kwun Tong.

The incidents happened between September 15 and last Wednesday and the girls' schools told police about the incidents last Friday.

Swine flu kills two

Two elderly men infected with swine flu - an 87-year-old at Queen Mary Hospital and a 75-year-old at Tuen Mun Hospital - died in hospital yesterday, the Centre for Health Protection said. As at 2pm, there were 20 flu patients in intensive care units at public hospitals.

Man enters no plea to ballet teacher's murder

A 44-year-old man appeared in Kwun Tong Court yesterday charged with murdering ballet school principal Chui Moon-fan, also 44.

Wong Pak-hung entered no plea. He is accused of killing Chui on July 8 in a staircase connecting Sau Mau Ping Estate Playground No 3 and Hiu Lai Court.

Man arrested over ballet teacher's robbery-murder

A 44-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of robbing and murdering a ballet teacher in Sau Mau Ping five months ago.

The unemployed man was arrested in his Sau Mau Ping home, police said.

Community service order for pop singer

Pop singer Jeremy Liu, 24, son of well known musician Liu Jia-chang, has to perform 150 hours of community service for drink-driving and careless-driving offences.

Liu, found with an alcohol level 21/2 times the limit after a crash, was fined HK$8,000 and banned from driving for two years when he appeared in the District Court yesterday.

Ballet teacher critical after robbery

A ballet teacher is fighting for her life after suffering a fractured skull in an attack in Sau Mau Ping.

Mimi Chui Moon-fan, 44, was on her way home to Hiu Lai Court when she was attacked on the Hiu Kwong Street staircase leading to the estate between 11pm and 11.30pm on Thursday, police said.

Son held after elderly man slapped

An elderly man was slapped after telling his 47-year-old son that he planned to marry. The pair were in a park outside Sau Mau Ping Estate around 8.50am when the son allegedly assaulted his father, 71, after being told that he wanted to marry a woman on the mainland. The father was taken to United Christian Hospital and discharged after treatment. Police arrested his son.

Man arrested after brother turns up dead

A man suspected to be mentally ill was arrested last night over the death of his younger brother, whose body was found in a rubbish storage area on a Sham Shui Po public estate.

Police received a call at about 7.10pm from a neighbour who said a 36-year-old man had collapsed near a refuse room on the third floor in block two of Pak Tin Estate.
