Conservation no less worthy cause in economic downturn

The article by Cynthia D'Anjou Brown, of HSBC, about philanthropy in tough times, has many astute observations ('Donating in difficult times', January 28).

However, I am sorry that like many of the larger foundations Ms Brown's article is devoid of any mention or consideration of conservation, the environment or animal welfare.

Two hot-blooded female tigers await South China stud

It must be nice being a stud and only one of an estimated 100 South China tigers left in the world.

This 41/2-year-old tiger from Shanghai, part of a breeding programme run by the mainland NGO Save China's Tigers, will transit through Hong Kong on Monday on his way to South Africa.

The Chinese tiger is not only the world's most ancient tiger species, but unfortunately the most critically endangered. There are only 10 to 30 left in the wild - about 60 remain in captivity.

Saving China's tigers

I refer to the article headlined 'Big cats and the bigger questions' (October 9), about the South China tiger.

The founder of Save China's Tigers (SCT) is Ms Quan, not Ms Li, and she was born in the Year of the Tiger which makes her 41, not 43.
