Brand director at esteemed tailor vows they'll never stray too far from Savile Row

When you've been making suits for nearly two and a half centuries and have dressed some of England's biggest names in royalty, you don't need to stray from heritage or give in to what's trendy.

That's what Ray Clacher, brand managing director of Gieves and Hawkes, believes.

Time to look good

Patrick Bateman, the finical serial killer played by Christian Bale in American Psycho, could never be described as a role model. However, when it comes to fashion, Mr Bateman knows his Salvatore Ferragamo from his Valentino, the difference between handkerchiefs and pocket squares, and the necessity to accessorise correctly.

But there is something else; the rare sight of men happily absorbed in the art of shopping.

Fashion's rule of good manners

Robert Gieve believes that fashion - that maniacally aspirational, other-worldly culture that has so completely obsessed modern society - really only comes down to one essentially simple rule: manners. Fashion, he says, is nothing more complicated than dressing in an 'appropriate' - yet imaginative - way for the circumstances, the setting and the social and cultural climate.
