Scaffolding collapses, injuring 11

Eleven workers were injured yesterday when scaffolding they were dismantling collapsed beneath them in Happy Valley.

The workers - who were Hong Kong and Nepalese nationals - were taken to Ruttonjee Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital.

A worker, 27, was fighting for his life in Queen Elizabeth Hospital after he and a colleague were injured when scaffolding they were dismantling collapsed in the Laguna Verde development, Hunghom.

Quadriplegic seeks $25m

A plumber reduced to a 'living head' by a paralysing 15-metre fall from scaffolding is suing the building's owners for an estimated $25 million.

Ta Xuong, now 36, was paralysed from the shoulders down after the disused scaffolding he was standing on at the Sun Hing Building in Nathan Road collapsed beneath him on February 21, 1991, the Court of First Instance heard.

BUILDING contractors have been warned that it is their statutory obligation to provide safe scaffolding and working platforms for workers. Breaches could incur a maximum penalty 12 months' jail and a $50,000 fine, a Labour Department spokesman said yesterday in the wake of a scaffolding accident yesterday when three workers were hurt.
