Redemption as Purton drives home Humongus

Zac Purton made amends to trainer Andreas Schutz on Humongus with a well-timed come-from-behind win, but there were some nervous moments once again.

Schutz was mildly critical of Purton's handling of his now six-year-old in a race late last season when he was beaten a nose in a Class Five event at Sha Tin.

First time lucky for Schutz

Trainer Andreas Schutz quickly turned the fortunes of Viva Freedom, preparing his newly acquired charge for a first-up win for the stable with a little help from a brilliant Oliver Doleuze ride. Formerly prepared by Peter Ho Leung, Viva Freedom had just three starts for a third, before being transferred to Schutz, who struck it lucky first time out in the Leipzig Handicap (1,400m).

'Step up to 2,000m could get best of him'

Trainer Andreas Schutz handed apprentice Vincent Ho Chak-yiu a rare compliment after King Of Scots landed his third win for the season. 'I was able to half trick the handicaps by using Vincent's seven-pound claim and happily he rode the horse just as well as Douglas Whyte did winning on him last time,' Schutz said after King Of Scots wore down Tom's Eighth by a neck.

'He will still be able to win one more'

The versatile Lucky Tycoon is in career-best form and Andreas Schutz is making hay while the sun shines on his seven-year-old, who has scored two of the handler's 10 wins in the new term. Jockey Howard Cheng Yue-tin navigated a beautiful passage from barrier two, saving ground along the rails to land a short head win over Ming Hoi Glory.

Hard-working Yeung earns praise after landing juicy double

You didn't have to look far to find a compliment for Thomas Yeung Kai-tong after a smart double on Connoisseur's Love and Romping.

Yeung picked up Romping from the list of rides originally booked for Zac Purton, who was forced to miss the meeting with a back problem after last week's barrier trial fall, and trainer Sean Woods said Yeung followed his instructions to the letter.

King Of Scots can make big strides next term

King Of Scots was another to have that 'next season' look about him after the Australian-bred three-year-old landed his second win in five starts, appreciating the rise up to 1,400m in the Larch Handicap.

King Of Scots win a 'landmark' for Schutz

For a man who has prepared five Derby winners in Europe and won five Group Ones with champion Good Ba Ba in the space of 12 months, you might think that winning a Class Four might have been a bit dry for trainer Andreas Schutz. And you'd be 100 per cent wrong.

Purton shines, but takes a short break for careless riding

Zac Purton gained a welcome, attention-getting double on one of the big days of the year, but will be sidelined by suspension after he completes his commitments at Sha Tin on Thursday.

South China have paid more than HK$1 million - one of the highest transfer fees in Hong Kong - to Portuguese outfit Leixoes to bring striker Tales Schutz (pictured) back into their line-up. Schutz, 26, left South China last summer after failing to agree to new terms following a prolific year. 'I am very happy to return to a club who have such confidence in me,' he said.

Champions Gallery foremost in Schutz's mind

Trainer Andreas Schutz got himself on the scoreboard for the term when the best version of Mainland Master turned up to win an incident-packed Poplar Handicap (1,200m) for the Class Fives yesterday, but he was just as keen to talk about a horse which wasn't racing and won't be for some time.

Schutz decides Dwyer is the right man to partner Gallery in Singapore

Andreas Schutz has ended a wide search with England's Martin Dwyer the new jockey for Champions Gallery in the S$3 million (HK$15.5 million) Singapore International Airlines Cup on Sunday week.

The Derby placegetter's regular rider, Olivier Doleuze, preferred to ride at Sha Tin so Schutz was forced to look elsewhere for the Kranji race.

Corrections & clarifications

In 'Schutz inquiry draws a blank' on yesterday's back page, we said trainer Andreas Schutz 'was partly relieved the matter had concluded with him being held responsible under the rules, but the trainer is also partly disappointed with the result of the investigation'.

It should have read 'without him being held responsible ...' The error is regretted.
