Rare hawksbill turtles released after treatment

Two rare hawksbill turtles were returned to the sea south of Hong Kong yesterday after receiving veterinary treatment at Ocean Park.

One of the turtles, 57cm long and weighing 15kg, was abandoned at a local animal hospital by an unknown person in 2010.

Ocean's 10 - Hong Kong votes for most-loved marine species

The Chinese white dolphin, the green turtle and horseshoe crab have been voted as Hong Kong's favourite local marine species by 6,841 people in a poll conducted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Named Ocean 10, the poll was carried out this summer and divided into three categories: My Favourite Ocean's 10, Ocean 10's Most Wanted and The Most Energetic Ocean's 10.

Poll highlights public concern for endangered white dolphins

The Chinese white dolphin has been named the favourite animal on a list of endangered species in a poll organised by WWF Hong Kong.

It also topped the poll of rare animals causing most concern as to its survival. The dolphin secured more than 50 per cent of more than 6,800 ballots cast online by Hongkongers.

Turtles leave human 'parents' to return to the wild

Conservation officers yesterday completed the release of 61 juvenile green turtles into the sea at Tai Long Wan, hoping they will one day return to nest.

Despite their small size, officers believed the turtles could swim safely to deeper water, where they could find shelter and food in seaweed.

Armed gang snatches gold-coin turtles in Sheung Shui raid

More than 60 endangered turtles were stolen from a house in Sheung Shui after six masked robbers threatened a woman and her daughter with knives and tied the pair up yesterday.

The Chinese three-striped box turtles, also known as gold-coin turtles, could be sold for around HK$6,000 each on the black market and used for medicine, police said.

Turtles saved from nest in Sai Kung to go free soon

Sixty endangered green sea turtles artificially hatched after their eggs were found on a Sai Kung beach last year will probably be freed next month.

Successful hatching for Lamma's turtles

Three endangered green turtles laid 900 eggs on Lamma Island this year, half of which successfully hatched.

Most of the baby turtles found their way to the ocean.

The three turtles nested at Sham Wan during the breeding season between June and October this year, according to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
