P&I warns on injury litigation in the US

The London P&I Club has warned its members that increasing numbers of Asian seamen - particularly Filipinos and Koreans - are seeking to bring personal injury actions against shipowners in US courts.

This is happening despite the seamen having been paid full contractual benefits to which they are entitled under the laws of their own countries.

Seaman dies

A SEAMAN was killed and 20 were rescued when a fire broke out on board a 14,695-tonne Greek-registered bulk carrier in the South China Sea. The man was thought to have died in the engine room where the fire broke out. An Italian vessel, bound for Taiwan, picked up the seamen from the Milenaki after the distress call was picked up at about noon in Hong Kong and Australia.

Seaman dies

A MAINLAND seaman drowned in a pool of water in a barge moored alongside a freighter off Tseung Kwan O. Cheng Chok-tsang, 24, was certified dead at the hospital.

Sailor sought

POLICE and firemen were last night searching for a seaman who was reported missing after falling from a lighter near Chek Lap Kok yesterday. The 27-year-old seaman fell from the barge Ka Wing just before 4 pm.

Seaman hurt in boat chase

A LOCALLY enlisted seaman in the Royal Navy was injured last night while intercepting suspected smugglers off the Ninepins group of islands.

Two crewmen, aged 22 and 26, on the medium-sized speedboat were arrested. No contraband was found.

The seaman was ferried to Tai Po and taken to the British Military Hospital. His condition was unknown.
