Chinavision Mobile Power Station

The sun is shining on the portable music/gameplayer market. Chinese manufacturer Chinavision has unveiled what is probably the world's first solar-powered portable media player.

The Mobile Power Station looks a bit like an inflated Game Boy, with a 3.5-inch TFT LCD display, and control and directional buttons on either side.

SanDisk, the world's largest supplier of flash data-storage-card products, has introduced an 8-gigabyte secure digital high capacity-format memory card. It is designed for new SDHC-compatible camcorders and digital still cameras with 5 megapixels or higher resolution.

Storage space for the most trigger-happy snapper

Many digital camera users will be happy to know that a four-gigabyte CompactFlash card will be available from SanDisk in April.

The CompactFlash format is still the most widely used flash card format but is quickly being superseded by the Secure Digital card. Sony's Memory Stick format is also gaining acceptance because of the popularity of Sony digital cameras.

Panasonic's D-Snap series of tiny, all-in-one gadgets started off as a novelty item that allowed users to take photographs, videos and listen to MP3 in a single device. When it was first introduced the D-Snap offered the convenience of an all-on-one device, but made severe compromises in terms of image quality and features.

Socket card for easy connections

Socket's new Secure Digital Wi-Fi card is thinner and lighter than existing Wi-Fi cards. Sold through Synergy Hong Kong, Socket's SD wireless LAN card pops into SDIO-enabled PDAs and mobile phones to allow them to easily connect to private and public 802.11b networks. SDIO-enabled PDAs are devices with SD slots that can take third-party application cards.

Notebook shows it is a true lightweight

Samsung is the new name to watch in notebook computers. We were really impressed by its first Centrino-based laptop, the super thin Samsung X10. The company's latest offering, the Samsung Q20, promises to be just as impressive. Also Centrino-based, the Q20 is even lighter than the 1.7 kg X10 - just 19.3mm thick it weighs 1.3kg.

Casio has made its latest personal digital assistant, the Cassiopeia E-200, so expandable that it is sure to appeal to the geeks among us.

The feature-rich PDA is equipped with both a Compact Flash card slot and a Secure Digital slot. You can also buy an optional PC card unit to provide a third slot.
