Seinfeld

Kelvin Avon, music producer

What I'm reading: I've just finished The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. I'm a closet fantasy book reader. This series [Kingkiller Chronicles] is one of the best I have read in a long time.

Q. So you think you know pop culture ...

1. The Toxic Twins is the nickname given to the songwriting partnership of which American hard rock?

2. What Hong Kong-owned racehorse (right) won this year's Arc de Triomphe?

3. 'Let me take you to the place where membership's a smiling face' is a line from what song by what 1980s British pop band?

Windows dressing

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, has put Bill Gates back to work in its global campaign to reconnect with consumers. The firm's recently retired co-founder joins comedian Jerry Seinfeld in a series of quirky television commercials that do not mention Windows.

American icon

Jerry Seinfeld may have called it quits but TVB isn't ready to follow suit yet. His sitcom-cum stand-up comedy Seinfeld (Pearl, 9pm) is back in Hong Kong for its seventh season.

21 Feb 2000 - 12:00am

Sitcom's last show was broadcast

We refer to the letter from Jeff Wong headlined, 'Still waiting for final episode' (South China Morning Post, September 18), in which he complained that our Pearl channel did not air the last episode of the series Home Improvement.

27 Sep 1999 - 12:00am

Sitcom City

It took TVB planners years to realise that Monday night is not the night for endless earnest news programmes, but someone finally saw sense at the end of 1997 and broke up the dismal 90-minute entertainment-free zone of The Pearl Report, The Wall Street Journal and 20/20 with Spin City at 8pm.

22 Feb 1999 - 12:00am

Shutting down for Seinfeld

DO not bother to call any of your friends, business partners or relatives in the United States on the evening of May 14. They will not answer the phone.

3 May 1998 - 12:00am

Fighting graft

Inside ICAC (Pearl, 7.15pm) is designed to make us all think a bit more carefully about the foolishness of trying anything dodgy, and a bit more fondly of those brave boys in, well, mufti. Hard-hitting documentary this is not, but then the ICAC would hardly have co-operated so enthusiastically with the programme if it had been.

2 Mar 1998 - 12:00am

Too much of a bad thing

One concern about the return to Chinese sovereignty is that all things British will be considered taboo, an unwelcome reminder of the colonial past.

It is, of course, right and proper that the British influence in Hong Kong be put in its place.

10 Jul 1997 - 12:00am

Birthday bash hit by outrage

The most famous party of the spring season in America has nothing to do with the Oscars or the New York fashion world. Unusually, it was thrown by Jack Davis, a political consultant well known within San Francisco circles but obscure to virtually everyone else.

18 May 1997 - 12:00am

Station's top-class line-up

We refer to the letter from Tim Crouch headlined, 'TV programmers incompetent' (South China Morning Post, September 4).

Mr Crouch asserts that Hong Kong television programming is 'pitiful, and an absolutely sorry attempt to entertain', and goes on to declare that 'the most interesting thing to watch on TV these days is Freddy's daily weather report'.

14 Sep 1996 - 12:00am

GRIN AND BEAR IT

IF THE sitcom of the 1990s, like that of other decades, reflects the angst of its inhabitants, then this is the era of relationships - the messy, complicated man/woman variety. Some of the best of the current crop of American sitcoms, like Seinfeld, Mad About You, and Love And War, play on neuroses about safe sex and nostalgia for the golden age of the '60s.
