More sex workers report abuse by police, survey finds

An increasing number of sex workers report being blackmailed by police, according to a survey conducted by a group representing female sex workers' rights in Hong Kong.

Last year Elsa Yang Yee-shan's book about local sex workers, Whispers and Moans, was made into a film. Now she has reunited with director Herman Yau Lai-to create its sequel, True Women for Sale, which again has a local prostitute at the centre of the proceedings.

Fake revolver seized in police ambush

A man carrying a fake revolver and police warrant was ambushed by police in Yau Ma Tei yesterday. Police had been hunting the air-conditioning technician, surnamed Lai, 24, since he allegedly robbed a sex worker of HK$3,000 on December 22 after producing the warrant. About 20 officers were involved in the ambush and subdued Lai after a struggle in Hi Lung Lane at about 6pm.

Union fights for rights of men lured into sex work

Hong Kong has its first sex workers' union for men, which has revealed that poverty and joblessness have forced more than 1,500 men to sell their bodies.

The union claims the men - among them a 13-year-old boy and a 63-year-old former clerk - are subjected to police abuse and social discrimination.

Sex worker dragged naked into street after robbery bid

A knife-wielding robber held his victim hostage and dragged her naked into the street in an attempt to escape police during a standoff in Sheung Shui yesterday.

The incident occurred after a robbery went awry in a one-woman brothel in San Shing Avenue at 2.30pm.

Passer-by nets brothel thief

A 21-year-old man posing as a customer tried to rob a Thai sex worker in a one-woman brothel in On Ning Road, Yuen Long. He fled empty-handed and ran out of the building when the woman, 27, shouted for help. Police said the man was intercepted by a 36-year-old male passer-by who chased him and handed him over to police.
