Lifeline a Super chance for Hong Kong as our horses take on Macau's best

The local horses have generally had the wood on the visitors in a decade of the $2 million Hong Kong Macau Trophy (1,400m) and rarely has there been a horse looking as well suited to the event as Super Lifeline.

Benno Yung Tin-pang's smart-looking sprinter My Little Friend franked his strong formlines with a top trial on the all-weather track at Sha Tin yesterday and looks set to break his maiden next time out.

Me Tsui Yu-sak won't stray from the straight course with Divine Ten until he has exhausted all options there but is still readying the headstrong sprinter for when he has to take a turn.

All we needed was Dick Dastardly in the Mean Machine being chased by Penelope Pitstop and Peter Perfect in his Turbo Terrific, all charging along the outside fence, because last Saturday was the closest we are ever going to get to Wacky Races at Sha Tin. Punters were that perplexed they were praying for more races on the much-maligned all-weather track, just for some certainty.

Jockey Club officials defended a decision to put extra watering on Sha Tin racecourse on Saturday morning for safety reasons after the track became the bizarre stage for even more of a four-legged lottery than usual.

It is hard to go past Joao Moreira as the likely winner of the Jockey Challenge at Sha Tin, even if his odds-on quote doesn't look the greatest value bet.

Moreira is the only rider with a full book of 10 rides, and on what could easily be a wide open day, the Magic Man was installed $1.80 early favourite before firming into $1.60 last night.

Let's get it straight: track bias at Sha Tin is worse

The problem with straight racing at Sha Tin has surely now become unconscionable for the Jockey Club.

Looking beyond the sizzling win by Amber Sky on Sunday, which set him on a path towards Dubai, surely there has to be consideration the track bias may also have meant the end of any such plans for others.

HK$1.9b price tag on pair of new sites

The site in Sha Tin's Kau To covers 64,046 square feet. It is located atop the Kau To hill and is close to a site owned by Sun Hung Kai Properties. It could yield a total gross floor area of up to 134,496 sq ft. The government has imposed a height restriction in the area.
