The family of an American scientist found hanged in Singapore last year dismissed on Tuesday the city-state’s findings that he committed suicide as “a sham and a cover-up” for a murder.

Lawyers for the Singapore government told a coroner's inquest yesterday that an American scientist found hanged last year killed himself and was not murdered, as his family claims.

Summing up state agencies' findings on the death of electronics engineer Shane Todd, they said "it is clear … that the medical cause of Shane's death was asphyxia due to hanging".

Senior state counsel Tai Wei Shyong said there were no signs of foul play, but Todd’s parents believe he was killed in connection with his work for a Singapore research institute with alleged links to a Chinese firm accused of involvement in international espionage.
