The Shanghai Gold Exchange plans to launch an international board in the city’s pilot free-trade zone in the first half of this year to attract overseas capital to invest in China’s gold market, local media reported on Friday.

In a place where access to the internet is restricted, international flights fail to land freely, and, most importantly, local residents cannot even breathe freely, the government is building something new called a "free-trade zone" as part of Beijing's ambition to open up the economy wider and faster to lure foreign money.

After Shanghai, is Pearl River Delta free-trade zone next?

Although analysts believe it might take years to establish a free-trade zone covering Hong Kong, Macau and part of the Pearl River Delta, a senior official said the region would continue to fight for one.
