Tennis superstar Roger Federer will make a rare appearance on the doubles court when he teams up with Chinese number one Zhang Ze at the Shanghai Masters, organisers said.

Inspired by seeing 11 of his 12 Ryder Cup winning teammates in Shanghai for the inaugural US$7 million BMW Masters in Shanghai, Jose Maria Olazabal fired a five-under 67 at the Lake Malaran Golf Club to finish the first round in joint fourth, behind leader Jamie Donaldson (10-under 62).

Third seed Murray, still on a high from winning the US Open last month, was out-foxed in the first set by the unorthodox Stepanek before recovering to win their quarter-final clash 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

A blogger in China who made a death threat against Roger Federer said he had apologised, but remained at large after  vowing to “assassinate” the world number one, according to an Internet posting. The 17-time grand slam champion has had heavy security surrounding him at all times since arriving in Shanghai.

Nishikori brought back to earth as ankle gives way

History-making Kei Nishikori was dumped out of the Shanghai Masters yesterday by American Sam Querrey as defending champion Andy Murray was handed a walkover into the third round.

The tall American recovered from losing the first set to seal a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Nishikori, who made history last Sunday by becoming the first Japanese player to win the Japan Open.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori cruised through his Shanghai Masters opener on Tuesday just 48 hours after making history in Tokyo as America’s big-serving John Isner saved three match points to progress.

Nishikori, who became the first Japanese player to win the Japan Open on Sunday, eased past China’s Wu Di 6-2, 6-4 in his first-round match.
