Chengdu, the economic hub of southwest China, has rallied with a strong economy since the tragic earthquake that struck Sichuan four years ago. The hotel boom continues and, as at the end of last year, there were about 16,000 four- and five-star bedrooms available in the city.

Shangri-La to open 11 mainland hotels

Luxury hotelier Shangri-La Asia will open 11 hotels on the mainland in the next three years, including two scheduled to open this year.

The company also plans to add seven hotels internationally over the same period, including in Turkey and France.

Shangri-La checks in for 45pc rise in profits

Luxury hotel owner and operator Shangri-La Asia saw net profit in the first half of this year jump 45 per cent to US$108.4 million on strong performances from its properties in Hong Kong and the mainland.

The hotel group's revenue for the six months ended June was US$894.6 million, up 24 per cent.

The Kerry Hotel Pudong, which opened in February, offers Shanghai's largest portfolio of hotel meeting and banqueting facilities, with more than 7,300 square metres of space. Its 2,230-square-metre ballroom is also the largest pillarless hotel ballroom in the city.
