What do you think of the plan for an HK branch of the Shaolin Monastery?

Not just for kicks

Shaolin Temple, in Dengfeng, Henan, often conjures an image of a lone kung fu monk surrounded by a dozen bad guys who are about to take a beating.

New kick in town

IT'S 6.30AM AT the defunct Tai O Public School in the tranquil fishing village on Lantau, and Australian teenager James Sheridan is preparing for another day of disciplined training under Shaolin kung fu master Wang Meng. Kick-start the summer

The Hong Kong Shaolin Wushu Culture Centre on Lantau opens this summer. It will offer martial arts training for school groups and can arrange English translation for non-Chinese speakers.

When the first phase opens in July, the centre, which is located on the site of the old Tai O Public School, will be able to host two groups of about 30 trainees each per day.

Arts

What to see: For centuries, the young monks of the Shaolin Temple in Henan spent most of their time in isolation, studying Buddhist scriptures and mastering the art of wushu (kung fu). Life has changed a lot since the West became fascinated by their feats (think of ex-Shaolin student Jet Li fly-kicking his way to Hollywood).

Kung fu kings

FIRST came the warning: 'Please do not attempt or imitate any stunt you see on stage tonight' - as if anyone would. Having an iron rod, or a thick wooden pole, or three bricks, smashed against one's head, is not most people's idea of fun.
