Crash raises concerns over safe practices

The fatal three-vehicle accident at Shau Kei Wan must be investigated to determine its cause and how such crashes can be prevented in future ("Bus crash puts focus on health of drivers", November 20).

Two of the three people killed in the taxi were top culinary staff at British celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal's famous Fat Duck restaurant. Swede Carl Lindgren, 30, and Briton Jorge Herrena, 34, died instantly.

Older bus drivers need tougher fitness tests

It's time the government and bus companies reviewed the health-check system.

Hong Kong has once again been shocked by a fatal accident involving a driver who collapsed behind the wheel of his vehicle. In what could be a sequence from a disaster movie, his double decker bus carrying dozens of passengers lost control and rushed down a notoriously steep road in Chai Wan, after its 57-year-old driver suddenly passed out. Sadly, this was not fiction.

Deadly bus crash puts focus on health of drivers

Legislation should be passed requiring all public-transport drivers to have a comprehensive health check annually, a legislator urged yesterday, after two double-deckers crushed a taxi and caused three deaths and 56 injuries yesterday.

Bus passengers yesterday described how they saw their driver collapse moments before the bus careened down a hill and caused a three-vehicle pile-up that left three people in a crushed taxi dead, and injured 56.

Five dead, 22 injured in bus crash in Philippines

A rescue official says a bus has crashed into a boulder on a southern Philippine island resort, leaving five people dead and 22 hurt.

Janus Rafailes, head of Samal Island’s disaster office, said on Tuesday that three of the injured passengers were in critical condition in hospital. Among those killed was the driver.

Tourists' Grand Canyon trip ends in bus crash

A charter bus carrying foreign tourists back to Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon has crashed on an Arizona highway, killing the driver and injuring more than 20 passengers, six seriously.

Arizona highway patrol spokesman Carrick Cook said most of the passengers appeared to be from Asia or Europe, but he didn't have details.

Bus crash in Iran kills 26 schoolgirls

A passenger bus in southwestern Iran overturned on Friday evening, killing 26 female high school students on board, Iranian media reported on Saturday.

Eighteen others were injured when the bus, carrying students from the town of Borujen, flipped on the Izeh-Lordegan road, about 700 km (435 miles) southwest of the capital Tehran, Iranian media reported.

Bus crash in Shandong leaves 13 dead, 9 injured

A bus travelling on an expressway has scraped a car, crossed the centre divider and smashed into another oncoming bus, Chinese state media said. That bus then veered off the road, killing 13 people on board. The accident occurred around noon on Sunday in eastern Shandong province.

Bus crash on Beijing-Tianjin highway kills 6, mostly Germans

A bus containing mostly German nationals yesterday crashed into the back of a container truck and burst into flames on a road connecting Beijing to Tianjin, killing six people and injuring 14.

The accident happened as travellers packed the roads during the week-long National Day holiday.
