A cutlet above the rest

Happy Saint David's Day. Today is the feast day of the patron saint of Wales and a fitting time to write about Welsh lamb - revered in Britain and gaining the same status in Hong Kong.

Respected chefs in Britain including Jamie Oliver, Richard Corrigan and Mark Hix are all fans, and Welsh lamb is cropping up on menus all over the city.

Shearling

This season sees more designers jumping on the anti-fur bandwagon (take a bow, Stella McCartney), which has resulted in more experimental winter fabrics being used on the catwalk. Top of the list this season is shearling, or lambskin, which has a similar soft and fuzzy texture to fur. It appeared on cool cover-ups ranging from oversized fringed coats at Etro, to gilets at Mulberry.

Sweetgrass

Sweetgrass Director: Lucien Castaing-Taylor

First things first: Lucien Castaing-Taylor's official title on Sweetgrass is 'recordist' rather than 'director'. This speaks volumes about the style of this documentary, as the anthropologist-filmmaker delivers a piece about sheep-herding in Montana completely devoid of talking heads, re-enactments or voiceovers.

BLACK LIST

Is it a colour?

Depending on who you ask, black may or may not be a colour. A scientist will tell you black is the absence of all colours in terms of light mixing. But if you ask a painter then it is a colour because you can splodge it on a canvas, and you don't have colourless paint.

Black sheep girl

The fantasy world of local artist Carrie Chau Wun-ying is anything but the happy-go-lucky cartoon wonderland that a quick glance at her illustrations might suggest.

Clad in deep colours and sporting wistful expressions, her seemingly joyful characters are tinged with sadness.
