A spate of car bombs in Shiite areas of Iraq, including two blasts minutes apart at a popular bird market, killed at least 29 people on Friday, the latest in a spike in violence amid a political crisis.

Shiite families refusing to bury their dead after twin bombings in Pakistan's troubled southwestern city of Quetta vowed to continue their sit-in protest until the army takes over security. Hundreds of protesters gathered on the main road near the snooker hall that was the scene of Thursday's twin suicide attacks, alongside more than 60 coffins carrying the victims' shrouded bodies.

Brahimi touts plan for peace in Syria

CAIRO - International peace envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, said yesterday he had a proposal to end the 21-month conflict there. The UN and Arab League envoy said: "I have discussed this plan with Russia and Syria … I think this proposal could be adopted by the international community." AFP

A bomb exploded near a Shiite religious procession in northwest Pakistan on Saturday killing seven people and wounding at least 30, police said.

The roadside device was planted on the route of a religious procession of the minority Shiite community in Dera Ismail Khan district, police officer Ghulam Ahmed said.
