HK$120m for longer library hours

Extending operation of 33 public libraries by two hours a day would cost taxpayers HK$120 million, the Home Affairs Bureau says.

It gave the figure in a Legco paper released yesterday, in response to lawmakers who urged the government two months ago to study the plan. But the government has not yet made a decision.

Extended library hours considered

The government is to consider extending the opening hours of public libraries. Undersecretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui Hiu-fai said since April last year, 33 of the 66 libraries across the city were open seven days a week, for a total of 71 hours, while the rest were open during office hours only.

Paper 1a

Read the following descriptions of the shops in a small shopping plaza and then answer the questions.

It is best to skim through the descriptions so you have some idea what they are about and then look at the questions. Information search is more important than careful reading here.

Library users would welcome late closing

Hong Kong's public libraries should not be closed during public holidays and opening hours must be extended on Saturdays and Sundays.

During the week Hong Kong Central Library stays open till 9pm, but on Saturdays and Sundays, it closes at 6pm. Over the Christmas period it was closed on December 25 and 26 and on January 1, and closed early on December 24 and 31.

Must stop early closing

I am dissatisfied with the service provided by the Provisional Regional Council's libraries.

As readers must be aware, these libraries are supposed to provide residents in the New Territories with a chance to expand their knowledge through reading.

Change plea

The report in the South China Morning Post of June 21, that Urban Council museums are to waive their entrance fees one day a week is welcome news to anyone who believes that publicly-funded museums should, as far as possible, be free to the public. The report that attendances at museums and art galleries have been dropping is less welcome.

Reviewing opening hours

I REFER to Victoria Lam's letter headlined, 'Strange opening hours', which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on May 19.

The Regional Council has a network of 25 public libraries which provide generally convenient opening hours for members of the public.
