Guangdong rights activist faces trial

An independent candidate who tried to run for a seat in a legislature in Guangdong faces trial next week for allegedly breaching electoral regulations, according to her lawyers.

Li Biyun, an outspoken land-rights activist, was to stand trial at the Shunde District People's Court in Foshan on Wednesday, lawyer Wang Quanping said.

Police 'doused in fuel and tied to van by villagers'

Twenty-six villagers appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with tying three officers to an overturned police van and dousing them with petrol in Foshan city, Guangdong, mainland media reported.

The villagers appeared before Shunde District People's Court and the charges included attacking civil servants and arson, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

Snap measure to deter bus robbers
