Helicopter firms hover for $1b deal

A DOGFIGHT between the world's leading helicopter manufacturers will begin next month when bids are called for about $1 billion in contracts to replace the Government Flying Service's (GFS) eight Sikorsky helicopters.

Sikorsky fleet found wanting

As Australia absorbs the blow of its worst military peacetime accident for 30 years, the question of the reliability of the Blackhawk helicopters involved in the crash has once again been raised.

The American-made Sikorsky aircraft have been the subject of controversy ever since Australia took delivery of the A$500 million (HK$3 billion) fleet nine years ago.

AMERICAN company Sikorsky Aircraft, which once supplied helicopters to the People's Liberation Army (PLA), says it is losing business to European rivals because of the United States' post Tiananmen restrictions on military transfer to the Chinese.

GAMECO to take on helicopter work

GUANGZHOU Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Co (GAMECO) has become the first company in China to undertake heavy maintenance on helicopters.

GAMECO has been able to begin offering heavy helicopter maintenance after sending 35 of its mechanics and inspectors to courses at Jiuzhou Airport held in co-ordination with the Sikorsky Aircraft Co.
