It wouldn't seem technically advanced if you saw it now, but George Melies' movie A Trip to the Moon was revolutionary, a classic in every sense of the word. Apart from being the first sci-fi film created, it was also one of the earliest to incorporate animation and special effects.

Silent film turns on the charm

Go to see The Artist. Michel Hazanavicius' black-and-white romantic comedy-drama - set in Hollywood in 1927 just as sound was coming to the movies - is outstanding.

Already it's won many prizes, and is up for 10 Oscars, including for best film, actor and actress, at tonight's Academy Awards.

Book, play and film

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was originally a children's novel written in 1900 by an American, Frank L. Baum. The first edition of the book sold more than 21,000 copies, making it a surprise hit. Baum was infatuated with the theatre and in 1902 he adapted his story for the stage.
