Sand and bands at Silvermine Bay Music Festival

Any rainfall in the aftermath of Typhoon Kai-Tak did little to dampen the mood of music lovers looking to enjoy some live beats on the beach.

Out and about

Less than an hour by ferry from Central, another world opens up. Mui Wo - or Plum Nest - is the usual access point to South Lantau's dramatically beautiful, semi-rural countryside and an excursion here offers much of interest. For several decades, Mui Wo has been known as Silvermine Bay, but popular usage of this romantic-sounding but factually misleading name is in steady decline.

'Non-natural factors at play' in festival being called off

It's bad news for music fans looking forward to this year's Silvermine Bay Music Festival. According to one of the bands scheduled to perform at the outdoor Mui Wo event, the entire three-day weekend festival has been postponed indefinitely 'for safety and liability reasons'.

Activists mourn as pier's plaque removed

One of three historic plaques at Queen's Pier was removed yesterday, leaving conservation activists mourning the loss.

Workers started removing one of two Chinese-language plaques - the third is in English - at about 1pm. The process took more than three hours as they carefully wrapped it in plastic and sponge to prevent it from being damaged.

Silvermine festival breaks drought for music lovers

Isn't it always the way? Hong Kong's music-starved masses go without any decent gigs for months and then are suddenly spoilt for choice.

So it goes this weekend, when Lantau plays host to the inaugural Silvermine Bay Music Festival on the beach at Mui Wo. Organisers have lined up about 10 local bands for Saturday's free event.

Wonderful location

Thank you for publishing the article by Tony Henderson headlined 'Lantau's charm lies in its simplicity' (South China Morning Post, November 9).

It does a little to bring home the fact that there are areas of life necessary for the balance and health which are sadly missing for the majority of people in Hong Kong.

Unsuitable venue for wargames

I was surprised, on returning to my home in Wang Tong on Lantau a few days ago, to see construction work taking place on open land.

Residents were not consulted or informed about the change of use of this area, which is directly in front of many homes.

Silvermine Bay off limits

Swimmers have been advised not to take a dip at Silvermine Bay on Lantau Island because of poor water quality caused by the recent heavy rains.

In its latest grading of beaches, the Environmental Protection Department said water quality at many beaches had declined compared with a week ago.

Holiday crush

I would like to know, with the more pleasant summer season, if First Ferry is planning to make contingency plans for the increased number of passengers that will travel to Silvermine Bay, Lantau at weekends, specifically Friday evenings.
