Yasmin Levy - sorrow by song but not by nature

Singer-songwriter Yasmin Levy prefers the sad songs. She will be performing at the Cultural Centre tonight. Photo: Jonathan Wong

With a voice as beautiful as hers, it's hard to believe Yasmin Levy's songs come from a very dark place. Yet like all great art, it's the darker side of the human condition that brings out the best.

A concert to touch your heart

The dessert that best describes Ellen Joyce Loo's voice is pave au chocolat et au rhum - a piece of rum chocolate cake. Mellow and not too sweet, her voice sweeps you to paradise.

What I'm listening to: I've been listening to a lot of stuff that I kind of always knew but have never really dove into. I just downloaded a greatest hits album of Bill Withers. I realised that there're a lot of materials in there that I've never discovered before. His music is soulful, and at the same time, it has a lot of social awareness and consciousness. It's quite impressive.

Build a Rocket Boys! Elbow (DVD)

One word sums up Elbow's fifth album, Build a Rocket Boys! - poetry.

The collection follows the format Elbow does best: a mix of dreamy guitar and piano-led melodies, bluesy guitar riffs and poetic lyrics. The band claim that lyrically the songs recount the ups and downs - mostly downs - of being young, seen through the eyes of someone who both loved and hated the experience.

Justin Bieber

It takes something unidentifiably special to propel a video to the most-viewed spot on YouTube, but teen idol Justin Bieber managed to achieve just that with his music video for Baby. But more than just the most-viewed video, with half a billion views and counting, Baby is also the most discussed video and even the most disliked video ever to have graced YouTube. Quite the hat trick.
