Yip unable to skirt new dress code

The last time Yip Pui-yin wore a skirt for competition was five years ago, but the Hong Kong number one will have to abandon her shorts from June 1 to conform with a controversial new clothing rule.

'I won't say I hate wearing a skirt, but I am not used to it,' Yip, ranked 16th in the world and Hong Kong's brightest hope for next year's London Olympics, said.

Maid jailed for assaulting 4-month-old

A Filipino domestic helper who jammed a towel into a four-month-old's mouth and shook him was jailed yesterday for four months. Gina Marisse Abellanes Asto, 38, was convicted at Kowloon City Court of wilful assault causing injury to a child. Asto's acts were caught on a video camera installed by the baby's mother.

Boy, 12, hangs himself after family row

A 12-year-old boy hanged himself after a row in his Chai Wan home. Police said the boy, surnamed Ng, returned from school to his flat at Island Resort, Tower 7, at 3pm and began arguing with his mother about his failure to return an electronic game he had borrowed from a friend. A domestic helper who went to check after he locked himself in the bathroom found him hanging from a towel.

GIRLS' SCHOOL trousers have out-sold school skirts this year for the first time ever in Britain, and if the trend continues, school skirts could be a thing of the past.

British family retailer Woolworths said that sales of school skirts at its 800-plus outlets have plunged by 51 per cent in just three years - while school trousers have enjoyed a surge in popularity.
