Benefit cuts 'keep homeless on the streets'

Street-sleepers yesterday attended a Legco panel meeting to air grievances about cuts in rent-related allowances.

They told the welfare panel the cuts would force them to remain homeless and make it harder to find jobs.

The cuts were made when the Government tightened welfare support, including rent allowances.

POLICE have appealed for information on the identity of an elderly street sleeper shot dead by a constable two months ago in a empty Mongkok building.

Police admitted an investigation into the man's background had yielded nothing.

Street sleeper dies as temperatures fall

THE cold spell has apparently claimed its first victim.

A street sleeper who failed to get a blanket from the Social Welfare Department was found dead in a Hunghom park early yesterday when the temperature had fallen to 11 degrees Celsius.

Street death 'suspicious'

THE death of a 62-year-old woman street sleeper in Castle Peak Road yesterday evening was being treated as suspicious after red marks were found on her neck.

A 59-year-old man, surnamed Chan, who claimed to be her husband and is also a street sleeper, was interviewed after telling police of her collapse. The woman was found lying outside China Travel Services.

Street sleepers attacked

TWO street sleepers were injured by four men in Sham Shui Po yesterday. The men, one dressed as a policeman, were seen getting out of a Mercedes-Benz outside a Chinese restaurant in Nam Cheong Street. They grabbed shovels and bricks from an alley and attacked the two street sleepers before fleeing. The two men are in hospital.
