Five years ago, as he watched TV images of South Korea's foremost historical treasure being engulfed in flames lit by a lone arsonist, Hong Chang-Won remembers having to turn his head away.

"It was too heartbreaking to see such beautiful architecture being destroyed like that," said Hong, a registered master craftsman who specialises in traditional Korean ornamental painting.

'Gangnam Style' star Psy receives prestigious South Korean honour

South Korea has awarded one of its highest cultural honours to rapper Psy for taking the world by storm with his Gangnam Style hit.

The culture ministry announced yesterday that the 34-year-old singer, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, would receive the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit, awarded for "outstanding meritorious services" to the arts.
