Three officers collapse in heat during anti-riot drill

Three Police Tactical Unit (PTU) officers collapsed in the heat during an anti-riot exercise yesterday.

The three men were drilling with 38 other officers at the PTU headquarters in Fanling.

The women officers taking part completed both the morning and afternoon training sessions.

The police's elite Special Duties Unit has halved the length of its selection process after officers expressed worries about their ability to endure a two-week test.

Police Tactical Unit officers will be given a pocket guidebook listing the first five steps to take during emergencies under a proposal to sharpen their response skills.

The proposal is one of a number of tactical unit initiatives to improve general training and better prepare officers for security arrangements during the handover ceremony and September's World Bank Conference.

Police last night said that despite firing more than 2,000 canisters of tear-gas in two days of rioting, they had adequate reserves if further fighting broke out.

Every police station, five police regional offices, the Police Tactical Unit headquarters in Fanling and the force armoury headquarters keep reserves of tear-gas canisters.

Riot exercise proves too much for elite police

Four officers from the elite Police Tactical Unit were injured during anti-riot training yesterday and two collapsed from the heat.

Two of the injured were thought to have been injured in an explosion, another twisted his back and the third injured his leg.

The officers, from constable to station sergeant, were taken from Sek Kong camp to Pok Oi Hospital.

Police collapse after anti-riot drill in sun

SEVERAL policemen collapsed after riot drill at the Police Tactical Training Unit at Lowu yesterday.

Five officers were taken to hospital after three fainted and four more felt ill at the end of the hour-long exercise in the morning.

One of the men was last night in fair condition in hospital, but the other four were released after treatment.
