The Hong Kong Derby will have a change of sponsor from Mercedes-Benz to BMW.

The Hong Kong Derby will have a change of sponsor from one German prestige car maker to another when it is run later this season.

The Jockey Club's seven-year romance with Mercedes-Benz has ended, with the announcement yesterday that BMW will put its name on the Derby for the next five years.

The Hong Kong Golf Association is on tenterhooks as a HK$1.6 million sanction fee for hosting the UBS Hong Kong Open - the local game's lifeblood - has still not been confirmed.

A worst-case scenario could see the HKGA left penniless from the US$2 million showpiece come Sunday, which would be a "tremendous blow" to the game's governing body, said chief executive Iain Valentine.

The Securities and Futures Commission's controversial plan to tighten regulation on sponsors of new listings has gained community support, according to outgoing chairman Eddy Fong Ching.

Fong said the regulator was likely to reach a conclusion on how to implement the sponsor regulatory reform in late November or early December.
