St John's Cathedral is to hold its first Blue Christmas Service this evening for those mourning a loss this festive season.

The cathedral's dean said Christmas could be an emotional time for people who are missing someone.

Options limited by history

The site of St John's Cathedral was one of the first pieces of land in Hong Kong granted by the British crown in early 1840s.

The Dean of St John's Cathedral, Father Christopher Phillips, said the land was granted free of charge but the Catholic church had spent GBP8,000, a large sum then, to complete the Gothic-style cathedral by 1849.

Sounds of Hong Kong

Not only can the public enjoy the performers' artistry, but they are also being afforded rare access to some colonial treasures and treated to a short talk on the building before each concert.

Once valued

I WAS dismayed and disappointed to read of the imminent 'eviction' of the Community Advice Bureau from St John's Cathedral (story headlined, 'Bureau faces bleak future', South China Morning Post, December 9).

Entry is by programme on sale at the door for $80 and proceeds go to the Hong Kong Friends of Romania.

Enlightening experience

I ATTENDED a concert in St John's Cathedral on Tuesday night.

It was a most enlightening experience.

And I'm sure many others felt the full spectrum of emotions I was feeling as I sat in the overflowing cathedral.

Curious about slain soldier

IN the grounds of St John's Cathedral there is a solitary grave, marked by a headstone, which records the death of Private Maxwell, who presumably died during the futile battle for Hongkong against invading Japanese troops.
